Maine’s open water fishing season traditionally kicks off on April 1, and now is the perfect time to prepare. Avoid last-minute scrambling by ensuring your gear, tackle, and boat are ready to hit the water. Use this checklist to get everything in order:
Fishing License
- Buy your fishing license as soon as possible to avoid delays on opening day.
Rods and Reels
- Inspect rods for damage, especially cracked or chipped guides that could fray your line.
- Clean and grease reel bearings if you didn’t do so before storing them in the fall.
- Wipe everything down to remove dust and grime.
- Check reel drags to ensure they are functioning smoothly.
Fishing Line
- Check your line for wear.
- Braid can last a few seasons, but leader material should be fresh. If it looks dull or yellowed, replace it.
- Spool up with new line if needed to avoid break-offs.
- Check backing on fly reels to ensure it’s not frayed or deteriorating.
Tackle and Terminal Gear
- Organize your tackle box and make sure your favorite baits are stocked in all the colors you rely on.
- Inspect hooks for rust or bends—replace any that are not in top condition.
- Check split rings and swivels for wear.
- Ensure tackle boxes are dry and free of mold or mildew from damp storage.
- Restock essential items like weights, leaders, and snaps.
Waders and Boots
- Try on your waders to confirm they still fit.
- Inspect for leaks and patch if necessary.
- Check boots for dry rot, especially on the soles and laces.
- Make sure you have a wading belt and staff for added safety.
- Inspect and replace felt or rubber soles if worn out for better traction.
Fly Fishing Gear
- Sort and organize fly boxes.
- Inspect and clean fly lines; dress floating lines to maintain performance.
- Check for cracks in the fly line and replace if needed.
- Ensure leader and tippet spools are fresh and well-stocked.
- Check and clean/organize fly vests and packs and make sure they are stocked with the tools and gadgets you need for on the water
Boat and Trailer Maintenance
- Pull the boat out of storage and inspect for any signs of rodent damage.
- Verify that registrations for your boat and trailer are current.
- Check the motor for leaks and ensure it’s clean and properly oiled.
- Test and charge all batteries, including those for the motor, electronics, and trolling motor.
- If planning upgrades like a live sonar fish finder, install it now instead of waiting until the last minute.
- Grease trailer bearings and check tire pressure.
- Inspect and test bilge and livewell pumps.
- Check trailer lights, tires, reflectors, and safety harnesses to ensure they are in proper working condition.
Safety and Legal Compliance
- Stock your boat box with essential gear.
- Inspect life jackets—ensure they’re appropriately sized and in good condition.
- Check all safety and legal items:
- Fire extinguisher (in working order and not expired)
- Sound-producing device (whistle or horn)
- Navigation lights (functioning properly)
- First aid kit (ensure it’s stocked and not expired)
- Check state fishing regulations for any updates or changes
Getting a head start on these tasks will ensure a smooth and successful start to the season. Don’t wait until the last minute—get your gear prepped now and be ready to hit the water on April 1!
